A diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. Internal combustion engines intake fuel directly into the combustion chamber, where it is ignited to produce energy. This energy is then converted into mechanical motion to power a vehicle or machine.
Thanks to its robust structure and low fuel consumption, the diesel engine is often preferred in heavy vehicles, commercial transportation, and generators.
The diesel engine was designed by German engineer Rudolf Diesel in 1892. He patented it in 1893 and introduced the first functioning engine in 1897. Initially developed for stationary engines, this technology later found use in ships, trains, and land vehicles.
The evolved systems in today’s modern diesel engines combine high efficiency, low emissions, and quiet operation—resulting in environmentally friendly and durable engines.
A diesel engine operates on a four-stroke cycle: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. First, only air is drawn into the cylinder. This air is compressed by the piston, increasing its temperature. Diesel fuel is then directly injected into the combustion chamber.
At this stage, the high temperature causes the fuel to ignite spontaneously—eliminating the need for spark plugs. The explosion pushes the pistons down, rotating the crankshaft.
This motion provides power to the vehicle. Running engines repeat this cycle dozens of times per second.
The diesel engine offers higher efficiency than gasoline engines due to its high compression ratio.
Each diesel engine consists of many components with different functions. Here are the main ones:
