What Are Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)?

Making electricity available when it is needed matters for business continuity and the effective use of renewable generation. Electricity production and consumption do not always occur at the same time, creating a range of applications for energy storage solutions. In this context, battery energy storage systems add flexibility to electrical infrastructure by storing energy for later use. Answering the questions “What is BESS?” and “What are battery energy storage systems?” requires more than an explanation of batteries alone: power conversion, controls, safety and site integration must also be considered. In this article, KJ Power Generator explains how BESS technology works, where it can be used, how capacity is determined and what to consider when selecting a system.

What Are Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)?

BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System. It describes an integrated installation that stores electrical energy electrochemically and supplies it as electricity when required. A BESS system combines batteries with power electronics, control software, protection equipment and auxiliary systems. A battery storage system should therefore be understood as more than a collection of battery modules. Depending on the application, it can store electricity supplied by the grid, solar panels or another compatible generation source. Battery energy storage technology does not generate energy independently; it manages when and how existing energy is used. A properly designed energy storage system can respond to changing power requirements and support the continuity of selected site operations.

How Do BESS Systems Work?

The answer to “How does BESS work?” begins with controlled charging and discharging. During charging, electrical energy is stored as chemical energy within the battery. During discharging, that energy is converted back into electricity and delivered to loads or, where the connection arrangement permits, to the grid. Understanding how energy storage works at site level also involves deciding when this exchange should occur and at what power level. The controller monitors consumption, generation, battery state of charge and operational priorities to manage the process. For example, a battery charged when generation exceeds demand can discharge when demand rises. Charging, discharging and auxiliary equipment all introduce losses, so the system cannot return all the electricity originally used to charge it.

What Are the Main Components of Battery Energy Storage Systems?

The battery assembly, comprising cells, modules and racks, forms the core of a BESS. A lithium-ion battery is a common choice, with different chemistries selected according to power, lifetime and safety requirements. The battery management system, or BMS system, monitors cell voltages, current and temperatures, supports state-of-charge estimation and cell balancing, and coordinates protective actions when operating limits are exceeded. The power conversion system, or PCS system, provides bidirectional conversion between the battery's direct-current side and the alternating-current infrastructure. An energy management system determines the wider site's charging and discharging strategy. Thermal management, electrical protection, fire detection and project-specific fire safety measures, metering and communications infrastructure are also important parts of the installation.

What Are the Applications of BESS?

BESS applications range from manufacturing facilities and commercial buildings to renewable power plants and electric vehicle charging stations. Industrial energy storage can help manage high power demand and support critical processes. Commercial energy storage systems can help shape consumption profiles in hotels, shopping centres, offices and logistics facilities. Grid energy storage projects may provide services such as frequency support and grid stabilization when equipped with suitable controls and connection infrastructure. At remote sites, a battery can operate alongside local generation within a microgrid. At electric vehicle charging locations, it can supply part of a short period of high charging demand. Each application requires its own assessment of power, energy and control capabilities rather than a single standard configuration.

How Is BESS Integrated with Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy storage helps manage the time difference between variable generation and electricity demand. Solar energy storage can retain surplus daytime production for evening use, provided sufficient battery capacity is available. Wind energy storage can help balance changes in output caused by varying wind conditions. Depending on the project architecture, integration can use an AC-coupled or DC-coupled arrangement; converter compatibility, protection, metering and communications must be considered together. The control strategy should account for battery operating limits and renewable generation forecasts. Projects may also use hybrid power systems that combine a generator, renewable sources and a battery. Seasonal variation and extended periods of insufficient generation must be included in the design rather than assuming that storage alone can cover every energy shortfall.

How Do BESS Systems Contribute to Energy Efficiency?

As part of an energy management strategy, BESS can help align electricity supply with demand. Load balancing can reshape a site's grid demand profile, while peak load management can supply part of a brief increase in demand from the battery. This may reduce costs under tariffs that include demand-related charges. Increasing the use of on-site renewable electricity and, in suitable hybrid applications, reducing generator operation at low loads can also support energy efficiency objectives. However, storage does not eliminate energy losses. Round-trip efficiency, cooling consumption and standby losses must all be considered. A lower electricity bill does not necessarily mean lower overall energy consumption; the actual benefit depends on the site's operating conditions and dispatch strategy.

What Role Does BESS Play During Power Outages?

Energy storage for power outages can keep selected critical loads supplied for a limited period. However, not every BESS can continue operating automatically when the grid fails. Backup operation requires suitable island-mode power conversion, safe grid isolation, coordinated protection and an appropriate control architecture. When designing a backup power system, acceptable transfer time, load starting currents and the energy available at the moment of the outage must be assessed together. Sensitive equipment requiring an uninterrupted power solution needs verified transfer performance and, where necessary, UPS integration. A generator or another energy source can complement the battery during longer outages. If the system also performs daily cost optimization, its controls should preserve an adequate state-of-charge reserve for emergency operation.

How Is BESS Capacity Determined?

BESS sizing requires a clear distinction between power and energy. The kW rating describes how much active power the system can deliver at a given moment, while kWh describes the amount of stored energy. Battery capacity should be selected using the load profile, required operating duration, usable state-of-charge range, conversion losses, auxiliary consumption and expected capacity degradation. For example, supplying a constant 100 kW load for two hours requires 200 kWh at the load. This is not the required nominal battery capacity; the nominal value may need to be higher to allow for losses and operating margins. PCS power capability, motor starting requirements, reactive power and simultaneous loads also need separate assessment. Peak-shaving projects must consider the size, duration and recurrence of demand peaks, not just total electricity consumption.

What Are the Advantages of Battery Energy Storage Systems?

Battery energy storage systems can offer fast power response, flexible electricity use, greater utilization of renewable generation and, with the appropriate design, support for critical loads. Battery discharge does not produce local combustion exhaust, although cooling equipment can generate noise. The potential for carbon emission reduction depends on the electricity used for charging, storage losses and the generation being displaced. Evaluating a sustainable energy solution should therefore also consider battery manufacturing, service life and recycling. At facilities with both electricity and heat demand, coordinated operation with cogeneration systems can also be assessed. BESS adds flexibility on the electrical side, while the heat output of the cogeneration plant and the site's thermal demand require separate planning.

What Should Be Considered When Choosing a BESS?

The first step is to define whether the project prioritizes backup, peak shaving, renewable energy utilization or a combination of these functions. Selection should then compare usable energy, continuous and short-duration power capability, battery chemistry, cycle and calendar life, warranty conditions and warranted remaining capacity. Ambient temperature, installation space, thermal management, fire safety, maintenance access and compatibility with the site's electrical infrastructure must also be assessed. Remote monitoring, communications security, service support and future expansion options influence long-term operation. An investment decision should go beyond the initial purchase price to include energy losses, maintenance, possible battery replacement and realistic operating scenarios. KJ Power Generator's energy storage solutions can be evaluated against the site's load profile and project requirements to determine an appropriate system architecture.
